Anchor Slam: Delta Gamma's Slam Dunk for Charity

Kennedy DeMars

On Sunday, March 23rd members of Delta Gamma and the greater Greek life community competed in Anchor Slam—a bracket style basketball tournament held at IM West.

Anchor Slam is one of Delta Gamma’s many events that benefit the philanthropy that is held close to members hearts—Service for Sight. Members of Delta Gamma encouraged friends, colleagues, and teammates to sign up for an exciting basketball game that directly benefitted the visually impaired.

At the event--coordinated by Vice President of Foundation, Alex Brunsden—four basketball games ran at once, while Delta Gamma members ran several other things on the side. There was a snack and drink station, sponsored by Gorgie, a raffle table, and many photographers documenting the event.

"Anchor Slam was super successful. We had a lot of teams signed up. . . both from DG and other Greek organizations, which is really exciting. I think everyone that came had a lot of fun and got really into the coaching," Brunsden said.

Coaches from DG led each basketball team that competed. Even those who had little experience playing basketball had a great time encouraging and cheering on the players. Every team that signed up made a direct contribution to Delta Gamma's philanthropy.

"All of the funds went to Service for Sight. You had to pay to make a team and sign up. . . and we also had concessions, so all of the money from that went to our philanthropy," Brunsden said.

Anchor Slam is one of the many philanthropy events that occur each semester. Next year, Delta Gamma plans to have a pickle ball themed philanthropy event that will also be a large contributor to Service for Sight.
