As a freshman on a huge college campus, starting a new journey can be daunting. But, making the decision to go through recruitment can make this transition that much easier!

Hello everyone! My name is Avery Ferguson and I am the Director of Electronic Communications here at Delta Gamma at Michigan State University. Basically, I manage all of the chapters social media accounts. Since being elected into this position, I have had many goals for myself and the chapter as a whole and I have always wanted to expand my portfolio to hopefully pursue a career in social media some day. One of the ways I felt fit best into expanding mine and the chapter's portfolio was through a blog! This website will serve as a way for alumnae, potential new members, and anyone else interested to stay up to date on the happenings of the Beta Xi chapter!

With formal recruitment just around the corner, I felt it was most natural for our first blog post to be about making the decision to go through the recruitment process. As a freshman coming to a huge college campus like MSU, your transition can feel super overwhelming, but going through recruitment and joining a sorority can make your transition that much easier. The rest of this post will be my first hand experience of making the best decision I could have made for my college experience, which was going through recruitment!

Avery's Experience

I started my freshman year at MSU in the Fall of 2020, the year that most students did not move on campus and completed their freshman year via Zoom. Not being able to move into the dorms threw a huge wrench in my freshman year because my mom always told me she met her best friends in her dorm hall as a freshman. That was one of the main reasons I decided to go through recruitment. I wanted an amazing group of friends that I would have by my side throughout my entire college experience. With MSU being such a large school and wanting to make some friends, the Panhellenic community offered me the most perfect opportunity to do just that!!

Coming from a pretty big high school in Metro Detroit, I knew tons of people that were also attending Michigan State, but I wanted to be a part of something. Throughout high school, I was in different clubs and doing sideline and All-Star cheer, so I was always busy. Joining a sorority allowed me to stay busy and also gave me the opportunity to hold leadership positions and be involved in something that meant a lot to me through various philanthropy and sisterhood events. So far, my two years as a member of the Panhellenic community has given me so many opportunities and experiences that I would not have gotten if I had not decided to go through the recruitment process. Being a part of a sorority made a big school seem just a little smaller!

Overall, becoming a part of a sorority at Michigan State was one of the best decisions I have ever made! I have met my lifelong best friends, given back to my community through philanthropy events, and held leadership positions that have given me so many real-world experiences I would not have gotten otherwise.
